BookLikes recently asked readers via social media, “What kind of reader are you?” They did more than pose the question, though. Using a diagram, BookLikes broke down different reading habits and idiosyncracies so users could think about – and be amused by – how they read books. I thought the image was so funny yet true that I had to share it here!

So, what kind of reader am I? Well, I am a…

  • Monogamist: I prefer to give whatever story I’m reading my full and undivided attention, so I rarely read more than one book at a time.
  • Altruist: Looking for book recommendations? I’m always happy to offer some! I also like to give books as gifts to friends and family.
  • Introvert: Plot, dialogue, character development, writing style, small details – I notice and applaud (or scrutinize) everything. I also feel more connected to a story if I can relate to or empathize with the main character(s).
  • Extrovert: Huh? Yes, it’s possible to be both an introvert and extrovert reader. Fantasy may be my favorite literary genre, but I like to explore other realms like historical fiction, science fiction, mystery, commercial fiction, self-help / spirituality, and poetry.

    • Wow! Everyone here so far has been monogamist readers. 😀

      I think identifying with characters is such an important part of stories. If you don’t relate to them, it can ruin your experience with that story. Do you agree?

      • Completely agree with you. If I can’t relate to the character in some way I will not enjoy the book as much as I would like too.

        Also I think it would be hard to be a multi-task reader. Mixing up the plots and characters is not a good thing if you’re a reviewer. So that is why I read one book at a time. 🙂

  4. A great post, Sara:) I’m also a monogamist reader… However my daughter isn’t. Ever since she was very little, she always had several books on the go at the same time. Right now she’s not doing much reading for pleasure – she has 2 small children AND is studying for a degree – but she always claims that reading one book at a time is boring. However, she’s also scarily clever…
    I’m also definitely an altruist and like to ponder and understand how a book has gone together. I by far prefer speculative fiction as a genre, but also enjoy well written contemporary books, crime fiction so long as it isn’t too gory, and historical adventures – so that makes me extrovert. So long as I’m not a neurotic reader, I’m happy:))

    • Oh my gosh,our reading habits are almost identical. 😀

      I have to admit, I envy your daughter as well as a number of book bloggers who are able to read multiple books at one time. I don’t know how they do it – and sometimes I wish I could! But I’m happy with how I read, for the most part.

  5. Polygamist, mainly because I read different types of stories for different reasons (if I need cheering up I’ll switch to something less dark for example). But I’m also an introverted extrovert when it comes to genres. Speculative tends to win out, but I’ll dabble if the mood takes me – but I will over analyse everything. Strangely enough, that started happening the minute I decided I wanted to write for a living…

    • Same thing happened to me, Colin. Once I committed to working on my novel, I started looking at the novels I read with a more critical eye. Even the smallest things can irk me (which is happening with the book I’m reading right now) or win me over.

    Like you, I don’t think I can pin my reading habits down into one category. I’m a polygamist in that I read lots of different books at once, but I often mix up the plots and characters, especially if the books I’m reading aren’t particularly good. I’m a monogamist in that I love re-reading my favourite titles – but then, who doesn’t? I used to be a bit of an introvert, but now I’ve started to branch out to different genres. I’m neurotic in that I get easily disracted and switch between books, but I usually come back to what I’ve left unfinished. And I’m an altruist as in I recommend lots of books to my friends and family (if they ask). So… I’m what, a bit of all six!?

    Thanks for sharing this gem, I really enjoyed attempting to analyse my reading habits. I doubt many people fit into a single category though. 😉

  11. I’m a Monogamist, I can’t read more than one book at a time and keep it straight and I LOVE rereads.

    An Introvert, I pretty much only read fantasy and scifi and I am good at over thinking things.

    Altruist, I like making recommendations and talking books
