Honoring Your Reality When You’re a Blogger

If you’ve been blogging for a period of time, you’ve probably kept at it because you enjoy it. You’re passionate about your subject, have a strong desire to write about it, and find joy in communicating with like-minded people. Maybe you’ve blocked out time in your schedule for writing your posts, responding to comments, and catching up on friends’ blogs. In short, blogging has become part of your routine, and it’s impossible to imagine your life without it.

That is, until something happens in your offline life, and you have to put your blogging on hold.

Back from My Hiatus, and with a New DIY MFA Article!

Setting in stories isn’t discussed as frequently as plot and characters. Yet it’s just as important, using location, time period, and other elements to play a pivotal role, from establishing the protagonist’s “normal world” to creating natural or societal obstacles that the characters will face. But did you know that, in some cases, a story’s setting can also be the garden from which some of its themes can grow? The idea intrigued me enough that I devoted my latest Theme: A Story’s Soul article at DIY MFA to it. Continue reading

New Post at Writers Helping Writers (Plus, I’m on Hiatus Until August 29th)

Writers Helping Writers

For my latest post at Writers Helping Writers, I wrote about one of the most important tools in a writer’s toolbox. It’s just as important as more obvious “tools,” like vocabulary, industry knowledge, and strong work ethic – but it’s also incredibly challenging to master. If you haven’t guessed it yet, this “tool” is confidence. And today, I share my most recent struggle with confidence in my craft as well as tips on how to create your unique way of rebounding after setbacks or being overwhelmed by doubt. It’s more personal than my past WHW articles, but I hope that readers will still find it encouraging and informative. Continue reading

What’s Making Me Happy: March 2017 (Plus, I’m on Hiatus Until April 18th)

The best way to describe my March 2017 would be “a month of two parts.” (Did anyone catch the nod to the Kingkiller Chronicle prologues? *wink*) The first half was still stressful and discouraging like February had been, partly because I was still dealing with anxiety flare-ups. But after taking active steps to better manage my anxiety (including resuming my writing routine), and thanks to the knowledge that spring is here (YAY!), the second half of the month was more productive and meditative. Oh, and busy with final preparations for the Iceland Writers Retreat! I can’t believe it’s NEXT WEEK!! 😀

And now that I think about it, this month’s edition of What’s Making Me Happy reflects that mix of excitement, relaxation, and creativity. So let me share my March joys with you, and feel free to share yours in your comments.

What’s Making Me Happy in December 2016 (Plus, I’m on a Holiday Blogging Hiatus)

happiness-december-2016

Today’s post is a special one. I’m linking up with writing friend and fellow DIY MFA staff writer Leanne Sowul for her monthly “What Makes Me Happy” series. (Click here to go directly to her December post.) Plus, as you might have noticed from the post’s title, this will be my last blog post for 2016. And with Christmas and the New Year around the corner, it’s a good time to celebrate the little things that make you happy, right? 🙂

Since it’s still the holiday season, I’ll start with…

Happy Holidays! (Plus, I’m On Hiatus)

Happy Holidays 2015

Just wanted to wish you all a wonderful holiday season! May these last few days of the year be filled with warmth, good food and company, and lots of love and joy.

Also, starting today I’m taking a 2-week hiatus from the blog. I may pop in to reply to comments or catch up on other sites. But, with the exception of my monthly wrap-up post (Time Flies) on Wednesday, December 30th, nothing new will post until Monday, January 4th.

Until then, Happy Holidays!  🙂

On a Mini-Hiatus Until Tuesday, August 4th

Hi, everyone!

Just a quick note that starting today, I’m on a “mini” blogging hiatus for Writer’s Digest Conference. The Time Flies monthly wrap-up will still post as scheduled tomorrow (Friday, July 31st). I may check comments from time to time over the weekend, but I won’t formally be back until Tuesday, August 4th.

Also, the first post-hiatus article will be July’s Recent Reads recap, which should go live on Wednesday, August 5th. There will be no 5 on the Fifth in August, but the meme will return in September.

Finally, I should be around on Twitter as time allows during WDC. You can catch me at @SaraL_Writer and see what I’m up to! 😉

Hope you’re having a fantastic week!
