When Gabriela interviewed me for a DIY MFA podcast two years ago, one of the questions she asked was, “What are some of the themes of your writing life?” This week I decided to pose that question to readers in my latest Theme: A Story’s Soul post at DIY MFA. But what exactly are “writing life themes”? And how can we determine what those themes are? You may want to have a pen and paper or your typing fingers handy for this one. 😉

As always, if you have any comments on the DIY MFA post, or if you have suggestions on theme-related articles you’d like to see in the future, feel free to share them here or at DIY MFA.
What do I do when I encounter writer’s block? PANIC! And eat everything in the fridge.
But seriously, thanks for this, Sara. I too write speculative fiction, YA Dieselpunk at the moment. And a theme that runs through all my writing is machinery. The creation and operation of machines, large transport machines in particular, has always fascinated me. Trains, planes, automobiles and ships are our mind’s children and can be almost characters in their own right, as I’ve reflected elsewhere. They amplify our human qualities, strength and speed, good and bad. Dieselpunk is a descendant of SF in the sense of Science Fiction, but it could equally well be called EF or Engineering Fiction.

LOL! I noticed you made this comment at the DIY MFA post, too, so I’ll respond in full over there. 😉

Interesting. I never put much thought into themes, believing they come naturally from the story and the characters, but I do find a few that keep reoccurring through my writing.
