Oh yes! There are a hatful of stories that right from the time I was a child reverberate through my soul and permeate my inscape – I dream of them and feel a rush of joy that I’ve experienced them. Peter Pan and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe were two books that first gave me that feeling, but regularly during my reading year, I still get that buzz… Lucky, lucky me!

I actually don’t remember many of the books I read when I was little. I did read, but that part of my memory is foggy. The earliest ones I can remember are from my pre-teen years. I loved a lot of children’s historical fiction (Scott O’Dell, American Girl series, Laura Ingalls Wilder), Nancy Drew mysteries, and girl-oriented contemporary fiction like the Baby-Sitters Club series. (This was before I started reading fantasy.) But those were the books that gave me the same reaction you described. They stuck with me, to the point that I still remember characters’ names and why I loved the protagonist or the story in general. In fact, I still have all of my O’Dell and Little House books. I don’t think I could ever part with them!

Love The Night Circus quote! ❤ This is something I hope to accomplish with my novels. Stories have the power to influence us, and motivate us. So many books have influenced me, like Lord of the Rings and Narnia, that made me think outside the box, and dream the impossible.

It’s what I hope to accomplish with mine, too, which is why I wanted to share this quote. So I’m glad to hear that other writers hope that their stories will have the same impact on their readers.

What a beautiful quote from The Night Circus! Such a mesmerizing book, full of enchantment. Definitely one of those tales 🙂
There are so many stories that have inspired me in the past, that have touched me and changed me irrevocably.
When I was still young, I was inspired by stories of little girls living in big worlds, inspired by their courage: Anne of Green Gables, Heidi, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, Little Women, etc.
Harry Potter was the final inspiration that got me to consider writing as a profession. The classic fantasies of Tolkien & Lewis inspired my love of fantasy. More recently, authors like Gaiman and Kay and even Jemisin most recently have captivated me with their lyrical prose & memorable stories.
And I could probably go on 😉

Like I told Tori, I could go on with my list, too. *lol* But Tolkien and N.K. Jemisin are on my list, too, along with Patrick Rothfuss, Ursula K. Le Guin, J.K. Rowling…
The funny thing is, when I was a pre-teen / teenager, I didn’t read fantasy at all. My go-to books then were children’s historical fiction (American Girl series, Scott O’Dell, Laura Ingalls Wilder), Nancy Drew mysteries, and girl-oriented contemporaries like the Baby-Sitters Club series. (I’m pretty sure I read Anne of Green Gables then, too.) I still own the O’Dell and Little House books, mostly because I don’t want to part with them. And several of those stories have stuck with me for a long time – in fact, I can still remember character names and bits and pieces of their plots. 🙂

I loved Nancy Drew, Baby-Sitters Club & Little House when I was younger too ❤ I can't remember what got me to love fantasy early on… ;P

Love this quote. ^ ^ So many books and movies and such have changed me! Lord of the Rings, the Hunger Games, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Naruto, Guilty Crown, Fruits Basket … I could go for a long time. XD

I could go on for a while about mine, too. 😉 But LOTR would definitely be on my list, since that’s what made me fall in love with fantasy.
