The 7/7/7 Challenge, Part Two

I’ve been tagged on the 7/7/7 Challenge again – twice! Rachael Ritchey and Michelle @ The Writing Hufflepuff both nominated me for a new go-round. And even though I took on the challenge last fall, now is a good time to do it again because of the revisions I’ve been working on.

The rules of the 7/7/7 Challenge are super-simple:

  1. Go to page 7 of your WIP.
  2. Scroll down to Line 7.
  3. Share the next 7 sentences in a blog post.
  4. After the excerpt, tag 7 other writers to continue the challenge.

Last time I took seven lines from Chapter 7 of TKC. This time, I’ll follow the challenge verbatim. Here are seven (very crucial) lines from Page 7 of Draft #2 of TKC:

 A hunting trap laid on the ground, its jaws of jagged iron teeth as black as night clamped shut.

A long-forgotten anger rose like bile in my throat. Only one race in the Great Isle used iron hunting traps – and they had no reason whatsoever to set foot in our forest.

“Eva!” Doni’s voice startled me. He landed and ran to my side. Keli was not far behind.

Kind of spoiler-ish, but I liked this excerpt so much that I couldn’t not share it! 😉

  3. I liked it, too! 🙂 I’m glad you participated. It’s fun to see a glimpse into your current WIP. I am now searching my basement for rusty traps. I have kids…Oh, never mind I better keep my eyes peeled for legos instead. 🙂

      Thanks for your comments, too. Everyone seems to like it so far. 😀 I think it could still use some editing, but that’s the perfectionist in me. We can take care of that come Draft #3. *lol*

      I’m more than a third of the way through Draft #2. Some sessions go “faster” than others depending on whether I need to delete things or completely rewrite. Where do things stand with your WIP? (I imagine it’s on the backburner now that you’re in college?)

      • It was a complete accident to post on the 7th, but yes, it does work out quite well, doesn’t it? ;D

        Ohmygosh, we’re all perfectionists in our own way. It’s great that it sounds like your second draft is going so well, though! I know what you mean when you say that some sessions go “faster” – it depends on if things need adding or just small changes, and then I also find that it depends on the scene, itself – if it’s a scene you absolutely love (a favorite part of the novel), you just kind of get in the zone and it’s over too soon XD So glad to hear it’s going well; keep me updated? I’d love to learn more about it 🙂

        So far I’m actually going strong! Although, well, we’ll see how long I can keep up the pace on my WIP in another week or two (I’m so exhausted already and it’s only been a week). Right now I’m in the middle of a brand new draft (completely starting from scratch) and I’m about a third of the way through (at or near 37 k right now, woo-hoo!). Crossing my fingers it doesn’t get put on the backburner, but we’ll see how things go 🙂

      • That’s true, all writers tend to be perfectionists in their own way. 🙂

        Good for you for making the time to work on your WIP in between classes. I did that too, when I was in college (and with a totally different WIP, not TKC), and it was tough. The most important thing is to not spread yourself too thin. Make sure you have time to relax and have fun in between everything. 😉

        I tweet about my progress on TKC on Twitter during the weekends (the only time I have to work on the book, tbh). I also do a series here at the blog called Chronicling The Craft, where I balance a WIP status update with writing tips and other things. So if you sign up to receive blog updates via email, you’ll get them that way too.

  9. Thanks for nominating me! I did this challenge a while ago on Facebook (though back then it was any 7 lines from page 7), but I guess I could use my other WIP. I’ll try to post something next week.
    As for the fragment: it got me intrigued and it didn’t feel spoilerish to me :).

  13. This is an intriguing excerpt! Spoiler alert, heehee, I can guess what the “spoiler” is 😉 , but I think it makes me want to read the book even more, so it’s a good thing. 🙂

      • Aw, I’m happy you were thinking about me. 🙂 I announced the trip at the end of a Madnes Solver post, but I don’t think everyone noticed it at the end there, haha.
        I did enjoy it! I should write a post about it, if I can get my lazy self to write it. 😀 I visited with relatives in IL, and got to see the art museum in St. Louis!
