Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming book releases that I’m looking forward to. My WOW postings won’t be weekly, but they’ll come on Wednesdays when my blogging schedule is open and when I add a yet-to-be-published book to my wishlist.
This Wednesday, I’m waiting on This Monstrous Thing, the debut novel by Mackenzi Lee. Frankenstein-ish stories usually don’t appeal to me, but that was before I read Mackenzi’s recent interview at EM Castellan’s blog. Her answers sing with intelligence, passion, and personality; and I was immediately drawn to her blended love of historical fiction and fantasy. You know what really seized my attention, though? Mackenzi lives in Boston, and works at Porter Square Books in Cambridge! So I’m happy to support a writer who lives near me. And between the suspenseful blurb and the brilliant, ominous cover, I’m excited to see what This Monstrous Thing is all about when it’s released next month.
This Monstrous Thing
Mackenzi Lee
Historical Fantasy / Steampunk / Young Adult
Publication Date: September 22, 2015
Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Book Depository / Goodreads
Synopsis:
In 1818 Geneva, men built with clockwork parts live hidden away from society, cared for only by illegal mechanics called Shadow Boys. Two years ago, Shadow Boy Alasdair Finch’s life shattered to bits.
His brother, Oliver—dead.
His sweetheart, Mary—gone.
His chance to break free of Geneva—lost.
Heart-broken and desperate, Alasdair does the unthinkable: He brings Oliver back from the dead.
But putting back together a broken life is more difficult than mending bones and adding clockwork pieces. Oliver returns more monster than man, and Alasdair’s horror further damages the already troubled relationship.
Then comes the publication of Frankenstein and the city intensifies its search for Shadow Boys, aiming to discover the real life doctor and his monster. Alasdair finds refuge with his idol, the brilliant Dr. Geisler, who may offer him a way to escape the dangerous present and his guilt-ridden past, but at a horrible price only Oliver can pay…
What book(s) are you waiting on this Wednesday? Are you also looking forward to This Monstrous Thing?
I’m waiting on this too! I have an Edelweiss copy I’ll be reading soon. Awesome pick!

Thanks! Mackenzi is going to be at an event in Boston next month with a few other YA authors (including Leigh Bardugo (!!!) and Renee Ahdieh), so I’m going to pick up This Monstrous Thing then. 🙂

Doesn’t it? 😀 Mackenzi’s going to be at an author event I’m planning to attend in September, so I’m looking forward to that!

Ooooh, this book looks good. I always liked the idea of Frankenstein more than the novel (would you believe it’s a little boring?). I just went and read that interview and it made me want to read the book even more. (And The Mountain Goats sound intriguing. That’s a funny band name).
Thanks for sharing this 😉

Intriguing! I’ll wait for your review to decide whether it’s something I’d like or not. Oh I’m curious, what’s the authors event in Boston you’re going to?

I’ll definitely review it once I’ve had a chance to read it. 😉
The event is the Boston Teen Author Festival at the Cambridge Public Library. I think it’s the last Saturday in September… Several other YA authors will be there as well. I’m especially looking forward to Leigh Bardugo (Grisha Trilogy), Renee Ahdieh (I read her debut novel THE WRATH AND THE DAWN earlier this summer, and it was very good), and Mackenzi. Thanks for the link! Whenever I see events like these, I can’t help but think and dream how awesome it would be to be one of those published authors, y’know? 🙂

This sounds like an intriguing read, Sara:). A zombie with a heartbreaking backstory, by the sound of it… Nifty. Do let me know what you think when you’ve read it.
