Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming book releases that I’m looking forward to. My WOW postings won’t be weekly, but they’ll come on Wednesdays when my blogging schedule is open and when I add a yet-to-be-published book to my wishlist. 

This Wednesday, I’m waiting on Siren’s Fury, the second installment of the Storm Siren Trilogy by Mary Weber. Her debut novel Storm Siren was entertaining and gritty, thanks to its use of elemental magic, unique characters, and resonant themes that were perfect for a YA audience. Part of me is still reeling from the ending, too. Not many YA fantasies take a gamble like Weber did in Storm Siren  (if you read the book, you know what I’m talking about); and since it both gutted me and convinced me that I NEED to read the sequel as soon as it comes out, that gamble paid off. From the sounds of the blurb below, Siren’s Fury could be a wild, steampunk-flavored ride. But it also confirms my worst fears about Storm Siren‘s last scene. 😦 This might be a tough read… But the cover’s purdy, wouldn’t you agree?

  1. I’ve read the first book of this! I know what you mean by the ending. Like, holy CRAP. That’s some cliffhanger, but I just don’t see how it could turn out well though. It makes me very curious to read the beginning of this to see if there’s even just a glimmer of hope.

    • YES! It was one of those “I want to throw the book across the room” moments. In some ways it was a brilliant move on Weber’s part, since few YA fantasies actually dare to take that step. But in other ways, I dreaded what it meant for that character. 😦

      I sort of had a similar reaction when I read Jon Snow’s last chapter in A DANCE WITH DRAGONS last night… except if I threw that hardcover behemoth across the room, it might actually do some damage.

  2. I have the ARC for Siren’s Fury, but I haven’t read the first book yet. I just purchased it, though, so I hope to get around to this one soon.

    • Storm Siren was pretty good. Entertaining and a little more visceral than I expected, but that “visceral” aspect actually makes it all the more relatable to a YA audience. That will make more sense once you’ve read the book. 😉

      • I just flipped a coin to decide whether I was going to read it or The Shadow Master first (both books I have ARCs for that are the 2nd in the series). The Shadow Master Won, but Storm Siren should be next.
