Fellow writer and blogger Michelle @ The Writing Hufflepuff is holding a special Book Awards contest. I don’t know if this is something she does annually or if it’s brand new, but I thought I’d join in and share my picks for as many categories as possible.
Normally I’d share the rules and encourage other bloggers to participate. But considering tomorrow (Sunday, March 29th, 2015) is the deadline for nominations and I’m squeaking these in at the last minute…. Oops? *blushes*

I agree with Lord of the Rings, but not Fire/Kristin Cashore. I couldn’t get on with that book/series.

For “This scene broke my heart”, Prim’s fate in Mockingjay immediately came to mind. I was reading that bombing scene in the middle of a class and I started crying right there. Thankfully, only the girl who sat ahead of me noticed, and she had read the books so she totally understood.
Great choices with everything, by the way! The only one I disagree with is The Alchemist. My best friend loves it so much that she read it 3 times in 2 years. Me on the other hand? I could barely finish it! Just not my style, I suppose.

I have a really hard time recalling much from Mockingjay. (Probably because it was my least favorite of the THG books.) I do remember that Prim died, but I don’t remember how…
Totally understand your feelings about Paulo Coelho. A few other people I know don’t care for his style of writing, so it’s not just you. That first category was reeeeeallllyyyy hard to pick, btw. I had to skip it and come back when I’d finished the other categories, just because I was going back and forth between a few choices.

In Mockingjay, Katniss is fighting her way through the Capitol while Prim is serving as a nurse in the field (aka the streets of the Capitol). Bombs start falling and Katniss watches as Prim gets blown up! Katniss later finds out that the bombs weren’t sent by President Snow but by District 13, and that Gale had helped design the bombs for mass destruction,
Essentially, Katniss loses her sister and her best friend in one day! It was pretty heartbreaking for me, though I agree that Mockingjay was the weakest HG book.
Also, I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who isn’t a huge fan of Coehlo! It’s always weird when everyone you know absolutely loves something and you’re just in the corner like, “Um, yeah. No.” Haha!

OK. I vaguely remember that, yes. I guess I must have blocked out most of Mockingjay after I read it. That’s how dissatisfied I was with it.
Though a lot of it came back while I was watching Part 1, but… That’s a whole other story.

Hey Sara! I think it’s seriously cool how you know all about the latest challenges and blog events. It’s like one of your blog specialties now 😉 Loving this book awards one…I’m especially loving all of the Harry Potter references! The Weasley twins are definitely my favorite siblings in fiction. I’m reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower now, and I can’t seem to put it down!

I love that your pick for best book series (for a blog called The Writing Hufflepuff) is Harry Potter. And that there is a lot of HP-love on this list in general. Seems very fitting!!
Also, Ursula K. Le Guin for best female author! *claps* I haven’t read too many of her books, but I’ve loved the ones I did. One day I will finally get around to reading The Left Hand of Darkness.

Yay for another Ursula fan! 😀 I just love her writing style; and like you, I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read by her. The Left Hand of Darkness is a brilliant story. Haunting, too. I’d love to know what you think of it once you get around to reading it!
