Stacking The Shelves is a weekly event hosted by Tynga’s Reviews that shares the books (both physical and virtual) that you recently purchased, borrowed from a fellow reader or the library, won from a giveaway, or received as gifts. Stacking The Shelves will post on Saturdays as new books are added to my shelves.
I’m starting to think I have a book-buying problem. Any time I go into a bookstore, I see something that’s on my wishlist, and I must buy it then and there. For example, I went with a friend to Barnes & Noble recently because she was looking for a particular book. Guess who left with the larger purchase? *points to herself*
This edition of Stacking The Shelves contains the books I bought at B&N, plus a recent giveaway win (yay!) and some perks from a self-published author’s Kickstarter campaign. Take a look!
Giveaway + Barnes & Noble Purchases
Stolen Songbird (The Malediction Trilogy, Book #1) by Danielle L. Jensen (YA High Fantasy): I recently won this book through a giveaway at Books, Bones & Buffy. (Thanks, Tammy!) Stolen Songbird appeared on several Best of 2014 lists for YA fantasy, so I was wondering what I was missing out on. The next book, Hidden Huntress, comes out this summer, so I’ll see if I can squeeze in Stolen Songbird before then.
Life of Pi by Yann Martel (Literary Fiction / Magical Realism): I saw the film “Life of Pi” on HBO a year or two ago and really enjoyed it. That was before I found out that Life of Pi was originally a novel. So, naturally, I decided I wanted to check out the book, too. Currently this isn’t high on my list of reading priorities, but I’m glad I’ve got in my pile for when it’s time.
The Demon King (The Seven Realms, Book #1) by Cinda Williams Chima (YA High Fantasy): One of several YA fantasy writers whose work I’ve been meaning to check out for a while. Cinda has the Seven Realms series as well as a YA contemporary fantasy series called The Heir Chronicles. Out of the two, I decided to start with The Seven Realms, since I tend to prefer historical / high fantasy over contemporary fantasy.
The Distance Between Lost and Found by Kathryn Holmes (YA Contemporary Fiction): I like a good contemporary novel every now and then, regardless of whether it’s aimed for the adult or YA crowd. And after listening to Kathryn’s recent podcast at DIY MFA, I was convinced I should read The Distance Between Lost and Found. I’m reading this book right now, and so far I love it. Keep an eye out for a review in the next week or two. 😉
Perks from “November Fox” Kickstarter Campaign
November Fox by E.E. Bertram (Science Fiction / New Age): I met Esther (E.E. Bertram) via Twitter last year, just as she was preparing to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund her “fusion media” project for November Fox. By “fusion media,” I mean a truly ambitious scope: a print book, an interactive e-book, a music album, and other goodies. The campaign was a success in the end, and the perks arrived last week! The book is HUGE – not in terms of page count (about 250-ish pages), but it’s a very tall hardcover with glossy paper and (if I’m not mistaken) pictures / images. From what I gathered on Esther’s campaign summary, November Fox follows the outer space adventures of an orphan musician who’s also an animal lover and vegan. Esther described the novel as Alice In Wonderland meets The Matrix. Sounds pretty neat, if you ask me!
The other perks pictured above are a couple posters and download cards for the November Fox music album on CD Baby.
What books did you recently buy or acquire? Have you read of the books shown / discussed above? Feel free to share your opinions and most recent hauls by commenting below.
Oooh I saw Stolen Songbird at the library!!! I was going to get it but – is that the one about the elves/fairies/trolls? Because I only do elves/fairies/trolls under very certain circumstances. Not my fave fantasy creatures!
What a great fantasy haul. November Fox in particular sounds amazing. Need to check that out ASAP. Keep up the great posts =]

Yes, there are trolls in Stolen Songbird. I haven’t read a lot of fantasy novels with trolls myself, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about this novel, so I’m eager to get my paws into that one soon.
With November Fox, as far as I know the book is only available for purchase through the author’s website. (Nothing on Amazon or the like yet.) I think I linked to Esther’s page on the November Fox entry in the article. That would be your place to start if you’re interested in checking it out. 😉

I’m so glad you won Stolen Songbird! I really enjoyed it when I read it last year and when Strange Chemistry folded I was afraid the series was going to go into limbo. So glad that Angry Robot decided to continue publishing it, which means the first book must have done really well. And it was indeed a good read.

Yay! It must have done pretty well, especially since there’s a sequel coming out later this year. 🙂
Btw, Mogsy, did you know that in the Angry Robot reprint for Stolen Songbird, they quoted from the Bibliosanctum review? I don’t know if I read the review on your site, but who wrote it?

They did?! I wish they’d send me a heads up when they do that, if only because so I can buy a finished copy for myself. I’m the one who wrote the review 🙂

*lol* Well, now you know! 😀 Congrats, Mogsy!

That said, can I ask you a favor? I didn’t realize there was a reprint of Stolen Songbird. Can you tell me which edition your book is that you’re seeing with the blurb? Publication date or ISBN or whichever so I order the right edition? Thanks!

It’s the Angry Robot print version, published 2015. ISBN # 978 1 908844 96 5. Let me know if you need more info.

That helps a lot! With the ISBN and the fact I just found out the Strange Chemistry editions stock has pretty much been depleted, so any edition I buy now from major retailers hopefully should be the new Angry Robot one. Thanks for your help!

So many awesome books! I haven’t heard of November Fox but the package looks so awesome. I’ve been meaning to read something by Cinda Williams Chima but still haven’t gotten around to it. I also have Stolen Songbird but haven’t gotten a chance to read it yet either. I hope you enjoy all these!
